Does Defensive Driving Actually Lower Your Car Insurance in Texas?

Often, yes — but the discount, the amount, and how long it lasts are all set by your insurer, not by the state or by us. Here's how to find out what you'd actually get.

Many Texas auto insurers offer a discount for completing a state-regulated defensive driving course, but there's no single statewide percentage — the discount amount, how long it lasts, and whether it's offered at all is set individually by each insurer. Ask your agent directly what they offer before assuming a specific savings amount.

The honest answer: probably, but ask first

A lot of Texas auto insurers offer some kind of discount for completing a defensive driving course, and it's one of the more common reasons people take one even without a ticket to dismiss. But there's no statewide law setting a fixed discount percentage that applies across every policy. Each insurer decides on its own whether to offer a discount, how much it's worth, how long it lasts before you'd need to retake a course to keep it, and which courses qualify. That means the honest first step is asking your own insurer directly — not trusting a number you saw on a course provider's homepage, including this one.

Why the discount varies so much

Insurance pricing is built around risk, and different companies weigh a completed driving safety course differently in that calculation. A discount that's meaningful at one insurer might be small or nonexistent at another, even for the exact same course and the exact same driver. Factors that can affect what you're offered include:

  • Your insurer's own underwriting rules
  • Your driving history and current policy
  • Whether the discount applies to all drivers on the policy or just the one who completed the course
  • Whether your state, county, or specific policy type is eligible for that insurer's version of the discount

None of that is something a course provider controls or can promise on your behalf.

How to actually claim it

  1. Ask your agent before you enroll, if possible — confirm the discount exists on your specific policy and roughly what it's worth, so you know what you're getting into.
  2. Complete a course from a TDLR-regulated provider. Insurers generally require the course to meet the state's driving safety course requirements, which is the same six-hour standard used for ticket dismissal.
  3. Get your certificate. Ours is issued immediately as a PDF once you pass, with a serial number and verification code your insurer can check at prodriversed.com/verify.
  4. Send the certificate to your agent, or upload it through your insurer's app or website if they support that — most companies just need the document itself, not any special form from the course provider.

Does it matter why I took the course?

No. A completed six-hour driving safety course generally counts the same for insurance purposes whether you took it to dismiss a ticket, because your insurer recommended it, or purely to see if you'd qualify for a discount. The course content and certificate are the same either way.

How long does the discount last?

This is entirely up to your insurer's policy — some apply it for a set number of years before requiring a refresher course, others review it at each renewal. Ask your agent directly rather than assuming it's permanent or automatically renewed.

Note: we don't have visibility into any individual insurer's discount programs, rates, or eligibility rules — that information lives with your insurance company, not with us. If a specific number matters to your decision, get it from your agent before you enroll, not after.

Frequently asked questions

How much will my insurance go down after defensive driving?+

There's no fixed statewide amount — it depends entirely on your insurer's own rules. Ask your agent for a specific figure before assuming a savings amount.

Do all Texas insurers offer a defensive driving discount?+

No. It's common but not universal, and it's entirely up to each company whether to offer one. Confirm with your specific insurer.

Can I get the discount even if I didn't get a ticket?+

Usually yes — many people take the course purely for the insurance angle. Whether your insurer allows this is still their call, so ask first.

Does the discount apply to everyone on my policy or just me?+

That depends on the insurer. Some apply it policy-wide, others only to the driver who completed the course. Ask your agent.

How do I actually send my certificate to my insurance company?+

Most insurers accept a copy through their agent, app, or website. Download your certificate PDF from your dashboard once you pass and send it however your insurer collects documents.
